BSCCP Annual Meeting 2021 summary review

Zilico were proud to once again be sponsors of this important annual scientific meeting held by the British Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology and hosted by In Conference.

This year it was a virtual platform event which gave more delegates the opportunity to attend for training, education and networking with their clinical peers without the limitations of travel and funding, with over 800 delegates registered for the event.

The conference began, as is customary, with the Training Seminar and participants were welcomed by Chair of Certification and Training, Dr Jennifer Byrom, Birmingham Women's and Children's Hospital, with sessions delivered by clinical colleagues, including Prof Maggie Cruickshank, Dr Kalpana Ragupathy and Miss Deirdre Lyons.

The scientific programme was centred around the impact of COVID-19 on the cervical screening programme, the changes brought to screening, colposcopy and laboratories with the introduction of primary HPV testing and an important focus on improving the screening experience for women with learning disabilities plus transgender inclusion within the screening programme.

Following a minute's silence to mark the passing of HRH Duke of Edinburgh, the event was opened by Camille Busby-Earle, Local Organising Committee Chair who welcomed all and introduced the first plenary session: HPV-PS Roll out and Implications where Allan Wilson of NHS Lanarkshire kicked off the presentations with an overview of COVID-19 and the Scottish Cervical Screening Programme in 2020.

Zilico clinical founder Professor John Tidy, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (against), took part in the debate with Mr Mike Jones, St George's Hospital (for) on 'Exiting older women who remain HPV positive - Excision for everyone?’ with some very interesting comments and questions from the audience who were divided in their opinions.

Highlights from Day 2

Plenary sessions on the second day covered the impact of vaccination on cervical cancers, HPV-Primary Screening self-test and use of mobile phone Apps - The ROSE Project. Professor Henry Kitchener shared The RCOG independent expert panel review of cervical cancer screening in Ireland 2008-2018.

The Ian Duncan Lecture, presented by Mrs Beatrice Kabota, National Coordinator of the Malawi Scotland Cervical Cancer Programme (MALSCOT), was a fascinating insight into screening and hands-on experience of thermo-coagulation in Malawi.

Exiting President, Professor Pierre Martin-Hirsch of Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, presented the award to the BSCCP founders, Prof Albert Singer, Dr Joe Jordan and Dr Archie Crompton. Presentation of the BSCCP Founders' Medal was to Professor Lady Heather Cubie, MBE and President-Elect, Ms Theresa Freeman-Wang took up her role of President of the Society.

Following the presentation of prizes, closing remarks were delivered by Pierre Martin-Hirsch and Camille Busby-Earle, concluding a successful first virtual BSCCP meeting.
